This was one of the few towns founded by this King. In 1329, Vila-real changed its laws from the original ones of the Kingdom of Aragon to those of the Kingdom of Valencia.

From its foundation, Vila-real was represented in the government of the region, and was given the privilege of being able to use the insignia of King Jaime I on its shield – four vertical red bars on a gold background-.

The city was built in a "hypodamic" shape, that is, a rectangle surrounded by walls and crossed by two main streets. On the crossroads between these two streets, a main square with arches (Plaça de la Vila). Reinforcing the outer walls, a perimeter moat and armed towers on the corners. The South-East Tower remains still today (Torre Motxa).
