| The whole city has its basic reference points. If you come to Madrid by car, one of the first things you will see after the M-30 and the M-40 is the Paseo de la Castellana. This large avenue crosses the city north-south, cutting it virtually in half, connects the old part of the city with the new business districts and is one of the most singular references in Madrid.
Spectacular views of the city may be gained from the Faro de Madrid tower, the Madrid cable car and the sunset from the Parque de las Vistillas.
El Retiro is a park of tree-lined avenues, concerts and puppet shows, whereas the Casa de Campo provides all kinds of surprises, from an amusement park to more furtive attractions.
The Real Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales is full of works of art, whereas the treasures of the Convento de las Carboneras are the delicious home-made biscuits.
Spend a morning in the splendid Royal Palace and then go to the Palacio de Comunicaciones to buy some stamps.
