| Founded by the Romans in the year 24 bc, in the same place as Salduie, an Iberian fortified village on the banks of the river Ebro. Caesaraugusta, the first name given to the city of Zaragoza, was the main diffuser of Roman culture, and its fortified structure made it the defender of the Visigothic Reign.
With the arrival of the Moslems in 714, it became the capital of the Upper Mark of al-Andalus, and became independent in 1018 as the capital of the Taifas Kingdom.
King Alfonso I of Aragón, ‘El Batallador’, conquered the city in 1118. It was made larger and given privileges, achieving a freedom for its inhabitants that they had never known.
Today, its privileged location between Madrid and Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, make it an exceptional meeting point. Its open, hospitalary character, together with its monumentality, invite one to stroll in its streets discovering the beauty of an open city stretching out its arms to the world each day.
