| The city was founded by the Phoenicians, who built a village near the hill where the Alcazaba is now found. In Roman times, Malaga enjoyed the privileges of a confederated city of Rome.
The city enjoyed times of greatest progress under the control of the Arabs. In 1487 the city was conquered by the Reyes Católicos, and this was a time of unstoppable decadence.
In the later 18th century and early 19th, Malaga gave rise to a bourgeoisie around two large families: the Larios and the Heredia, who turned the city into the second industrial centre in the country.
Today Malaga is still growing. The great miracle of Malaga has been the development of the Costa del Sol, which has turned it into the world capital of tourism.
